Gallery 1001 in Winfield is pleased to exhibit the work of guest artist Jazmin Lara through the summer months. Jazmin is a 2013 graduate of Arkansas City High School, and a 2015 graduate of Cowley College with an Associate degree in Art. She received many awards and recognitions for her work throughout high school including best of show at Cowley Fine Arts Day in 2012 and 2013, and First Place with her Portfolio in 2013. These awards led to scholarships at Cowley College. She was awarded ACE’S Scholarship, the Dan Spangler Endowment Scholarship, an Art Scholarship and a Cowley Art Honors Award during her years at Cowley College.
Jazmin served as the Cowley Art Club president during the 2014-2015 year, as well as a Student Ambassador.
“Art is constantly revolving around me and creates who I believe myself to be,” Jazmin said. “I had two great influences in my life that would rival each other at some points: American Midwestern culture and traditional Mexican culture. Both of these aspects of my life work in tandem to create a singular, unique approach to my artistic style.”
Jazmin has exhibited her work previously with groups of students in Winfield, Wichita, and Cowley College. She also exhibited her work in a solo exhibit at City Arts in Wichita in May and June 2014.
“I express my thoughts and emotions through my artwork,” she said. “When setting up a still life or composition I prefer to compare and contrast multiple objects in the plane – this allows the viewer to create relationships between the objects that form a narrative. Like the cultural duality that composes my identity; these objects all have something unique about them which makes each of them significantly different from the others.”
Throughout the summer of 2015, Jazmin will be working at the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council as instructor of art classes for children. She plans to continue her education in August at Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film in Nashville, Tennessee. Her career plans are to become an art gallery curator.
Gallery 1001 will hold a reception to honor Jazmin Lara Friday evening, June 5 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to stop by the gallery at 10th and Main in Winfield to meet this energetic and talented young artist and view her work.
